How to remove hair dye stains

Hair dye can be incredibly difficult to remove from clothing. If you have accidentally dripped some on yourself, this is how you can remove it. 

  • Before treating your stain
  • Black, brown, or blue hair dye 
  • Red hair dye

Before treating your stain

Before you begin treating your stain, check your item’s care label. If it says ‘dry-clean only’ do not treat the stain yourself. Instead, book your Laundryheap dry cleaning service and let us handle it. If your care label doesn’t say ‘dry-clean only’ you are safe to proceed. 

Black, brown, or blue hair dye

To treat your hair dye stain you will need…

  • A soft-bristled brush
  • Water
  • A basin 
  • Heavy-duty laundry detergent 
  • Oxygen-based bleach
  • Chlorine bleach (for white clothing)

Begin treating your stain by holding your garment under a cold water tap. This will help remove any hair dye lingering on the surface of your item. Make sure that you use cold water only as hot water will only aid the stain in setting further into your clothing

Next, pour a capful of heavy-duty laundry detergent over the stain and use a soft-bristled brush to gently rub it in. It’s best to use a laundry detergent with stain-lifting enzymes, so double check you are using the right detergent prior to pouring. Continue rubbing your stain for 5-15 minutes, or until you begin to see the hair dye become lighter in colour.

Once you are satisfied that your stain is a lighter colour, fill a basin with cold water and add oxygen-based bleach per the instructions on the packaging. Submerge your garment in the water and bleach mixture, making sure that the hair dye stain is completely in the water, and leave it to soak for at least 8 hours. 

After 8 hours, lift your item out of the water. If your stain has been removed, you can wash your item as you normally would. Should the stain remain, mix a fresh basin of cool water and oxygen-based bleach and leave your garment for another 8 hours. 

If your hair dye stain is on a white item of clothing and mix a solution of 1 gallon of water and 1-fourth a cup of chlorine bleach. Submerge your stained garment in this mixture, and leave it to soak for 15 minutes. Do not leave your item in the solution for any longer than 15 minutes as the chlorine bleach will begin to weaken the fabric. 

After 15 minutes, remove your item from the solution.

Removing red hair dye 

Red hair dye has a different composition than black, brown, or blue hair dye, and so the stain needs to be treated in a different way. 

To treat your hair dye stain you will need…

  • 2 soaking containers
  • Dishwashing liquid 
  • Ammonia
  • Distilled white vinegar 
  • Oxygen-based bleach 
  • Water 

As with removing black, brown, or blue hair dye, begin treatment by running your stained item under a cool water tap to remove any surface hair dye. 

Next, mix a solution of 1 quarter of water, one-half teaspoon of dishwashing liquid, and one tablespoon of ammonia, in a container. Submerge your stained garment in this solution and leave it to soak for 15 minutes. 

After 15 minutes, remove your garment from the solution and, using your fingers, rub the stained area. This will help loosen the hair dye and allow it to be removed from the fabric with greater ease. Once you have rubbed your stain for around 5-10 minutes, submerge it in the previously used solution for a further 15 minutes. 

Whilst your item is soaking, use a separate container to mix 1 quarter warm water with 1 quarter distilled white vinegar. Once your item has completed it’s 15-minute soak, rinse it well, and submerge it in your new solution. Leave your item to soak for 30 minutes. 

After 30 minutes, remove your garment from the solution. If your stain has been removed, wash your item as you usually would.

Should your stain remain, fill your sink with cold water and add oxygen-based bleach per the packet’s instructions. Submerge your stained item in the solution, and leave it to soak for 8 hours. If, after 8 hours, the stain has not been removed, repeat the process with fresh water and fresh oxygen-based bleach.

How to remove makeup stains

Makeup is very easy to get on clothes, especially around the collar of t-shirts. This is how you can remove those makeup stains.

  • Make-up wipes
  • Rubbing alcohol 
  • Hairspray 
  • Shaving cream 
  • Hairdryer
  • Ice 
  • Soap and water
  • Detergent 
  • Laundryheap

Makeup wipes 

Makeup wipes can remove the makeup from your clothes just as well as the makeup on your face. If you have spilt a makeup product on yourself, simply take a makeup wipe and dab, or gently rub, the stain. You can see makeup artists using this technique backstage at the hottest fashion shows. 

It’s best to remember that makeup wipes will only work on fresh stains that have not set into the fibres of your clothing. Also, it’s best to not use a makeup wipe on satin or silk clothing as it could leave behind a water mark.

Rubbing alcohol 

Have you accidentally smeared lipstick on the sleeve of your favourite shirt? Soak a cotton ball in rubbing alcohol and dab it over the stain. The alcohol will break down the oils in the lipstick and lift the stain in minutes.

Hairspray 

If rubbing alcohol doesn’t get your lipstick stain out, try using hairspray. Spray a good amount of hairspray directly on the stain, and leave it to dry completely. Once the hairspray is completely dry, rub the stain with a makeup wipe. The stain should easily lift and leave your clothing makeup free. Be aware that this trick will only work with hairspray that contains alcohol. 

Shaving cream  

This may sound strange, but shaving cream is actually great for lifting makeup stains. Simply apply a squirt, or two depending on the size of your stain, directly onto the mark and let it sit for 10 minutes. After 10 minutes, the cream should have dissolved the stain. Wash off the shaving cream with cold water, and wash your clothing as you usually would.

Hairdryer

This is less a tip for treating a stain and more a tip for how to avoid one. If you have spilt loose powder on your clothing, it can be incredibly tempting to simply sweep it off with your hand. Avoid doing this at all cost. This will only result in powder being smeared into the fibres of your clothing. Instead, use a hairdryer to blow away the powder, and leave your clothing stain free. 

Ice

It’s always best to use ice or cold water when pre-treating a stain. Using hot water can cause a stain to spread and set further into the fibres of your clothing. To lift a makeup stain, rub a cube of ice vigorously over the stained area, and watch as it lifts before your eyes. 

Soap and water 

Soap and water is a classic stain lifting combination. Begin by dabbing cold water over your stain and adding a very small amount of soap. Next, rub the fabric of your clothing together and allow the friction from the material to lift the stain. Avoid using a paper towel or napkin for this method as this will only result in flakes of the paper sticking to your clothing and making the stained area look worse.

Detergent

If you are prone to accidentally getting makeup on your clothing whilst you are on the move, invest in a detergent pen or detergent wipes. Simply press the tip of your pen, or dab a wipe, over the stain and it will be lifted. Before using a detergent pen it is best to remove any excess powder or liquid from the stain with a clean wipe.

How to remove henna stains

If you’ve been left with a henna stain on your favourite outfit, this is how you remove it.

What is henna?

Henna is a form of body art that originates from Ancient India. Decorative designs are painted onto the body using a plant-based dye, and it usually lasts for 2 weeks. In India, henna is associated with positive spirits and good luck. The night before an Indian wedding, the bride will take part in a Mehndi ceremony, where she will have her henna painted as a way to wish her good health and prosperity during her marriage. 

Removing henna stains 

If you get a henna stain on your clothing you must treat it as quickly as possible. It’s best to treat your stain immediately to prevent it from drying into the fabric of your clothing.

To remove a henna stain from your clothing you will need:

  • A cloth or paper towel
  • Laundry detergent 
  • A clean toothbrush
  • Cold water
  • Distilled white vinegar OR rubbing alcohol

To begin removing your henna stain, use a clean, absorbent, cloth, or paper towel, and blot the stained area. It is important that you do not rub the stain as this will only make it bigger. Instead, press your cloth, or paper towel, on top of the stain and allow your cloth to absorb the excess dye. Each time you blot the stain use a fresh section of the cloth to prevent the stain from spreading. 

After you have removed as much of the excess dye as possible, put a few drops of laundry detergent onto the stain, and use a clean toothbrush to scrub the detergent into the fabric. Continue scrubbing until you can no longer see the stain. Although it is important to be vigorous with your scrubbing in order to lift the stain, do be careful to not be overly harsh as this can result in your fabric becoming damaged. 

Once you can no longer see the stain, use cold water to rinse away the remaining detergent and dye. It is important that you use cold water rather than hot because hot water could set the stain. Keep rinsing your fabric until all of the detergent and dye has been removed. 

If you can still see your henna stain after rinsing the fabric, pour a small amount of distilled white vinegar or rubbing alcohol onto it. Let the fabric soak up the solution for an hour, before washing your item as you normally would. 

Should your clothing still be stained, repeat the process again.

Thanksgiving is a time to give thanks for everything that you are grateful for. It can also be incredibly stressful for the person/people cooking the Thanksgiving dinner. These top tips will take some of that stress away.

Make a game plan

Before Thanksgiving day arrives, sit down, with a pen and paper, and come up with a game plan. Think about how you want the day to run, what dishes you want to cook, what food you need to buy, etc. Start by brainstorming all of your ideas, and then narrow them down. Come up with a timetable of how the day will run and this will help prepare you.

Stick to the basics 

Thanksgiving dinner does not have to be a fancy, high-end, 5 course affair. Cover the basics before you start turning into Gordon Ramsey. Focus on getting the turkey, seasonal vegetables, potatoes, and cranberry sauce perfect, and worry about the rest later. If you need to, print out recipes for each section of your dinner and organise them by time of when you will need them.

 Don’t forget the drinks 

Make sure that your drinks cabinet is well-stocked for your guests. It may also be a good idea to think about how you will be serving your drinks. If you are busy making Thanksgiving dinner, it may be best to leave bottles of wine and beer in ice buckets around the room for guests to help themselves. Think about what will be easiest for you. 

Ask guests to contribute 

It doesn’t matter how many people you are cooking for, cooking a Thanksgiving dinner is a big undertaking. There is lots to buy, think about, and, surprise surprise, cook. As such, it is more than acceptable for you to ask your guests to contribute in some way. This could be by bringing the wine, making a dessert, or providing the vegetables. Every guest should be contributing in some way. 

Organise your kitchen effectively 

To make your Thanksgiving cooking as easy as possible make sure that your kitchen is organised effectively. Make room in your fridge for all of your food and drinks by clearing it out a couple of days before Thanksgiving. As well as this, re-organise your kitchen so that all of the equipment that you will need is easy to reach. This will hopefully alleviate some of the stress of cooking.

Stock up on containers 

It’s always best to have too much food than too little. With this in mind, make sure that you have plenty of containers ready to put the leftovers in. You can give your leftovers to your guests and let them enjoy your cooking a couple of days after the feast itself. Make sure that you keep some for yourself though. 

Start prep the night before 

There will be so many things to think about on Thanksgiving day, so it’s best to begin your prep the day before. Get some of the simpler tasks, such as cutting up vegetables and setting the table, done the day before. This will give you more time on Thanksgiving day to focus on the cooking of everything rather than the prep. 

Keep recipes in reach and in order

Stay calm whilst you are cooking by keeping your recipes in reach and in order. That way, if you need to check anything you can reach the right recipe in seconds. 

Enlist help

Remember: you don’t have to cook a whole Thanksgiving meal on your own. Enlist the help of your guests to take care of some of the smaller tasks, so that you can focus on the bigger ones. This could include, making the sauce, boiling the vegetables, or even just making sure nothing burns. A little help can really go a long way, so make sure you ask for some.

Enjoy your day

The most important thing to remember is that Thanksgiving is your day to enjoy as well. Don’t let the pressure of cooking get you down. Relax, enjoy your day, and spend some quality time giving thanks with your friends and family.

Use hypoallergenic products

Many laundry detergents use bleaches, dyes, and fragrances to make their products more effective. If you have sensitive skin, avoid these detergents as they can cause irritation. Instead, look for products that are specifically designed for sensitive skin. Alternatively, try making your own laundry detergent.

Try liquid detergent 

There isn’t a lot of difference between liquid detergent and powder detergent, however, when it comes to sensitive skin you should always try and buy a liquid detergent. Powder detergents will often leave a soapy residue on your clothing. If not removed, this residue can cause irritation when you wear your freshly washed clothes. Liquid detergent can also leave a residue, however, due to its liquid consistency, does not leave as much, therefore lessening the irritation caused. 

Clean your appliance 

Whether you have sensitive skin or not it is vital to clean out your washing machine after every two to three washes. The detergent draw of your washing machine can easily become clogged with excess laundry detergent that clumps together if not removed. This can encourage mould to grow in the draw. If you suffer with sensitive skin this mould can cause and insufferable amount of irritation. 

Use fabric softener 

Fabric softener works by smoothing the fibres that make up your clothes and making them soft to touch. If you have sensitive skin, specifically eczema, keeping your clothes soft will stop harsher materials from rubbing your skin and causing irritation. When buying a fabric softener, make sure that it is specifically designed for sensitive skin as some softeners can cause irritation by being overly fragrant. 

Separate your clothing 

When you wash your clothing it’s important to separate your clothes by their material. If you wash delicate fabrics, such as silk, with harsher fabrics, such as denim, the harsh fabric can damage the fibres of the more delicate material and make the clothing more abrasive. This can lead to your clothing causing irritation on your next wear. To avoid this, wash all of your delicate fabrics in one load and your harsher fabrics in another. 

Follow the instructions

It’s easy to over-pour your detergent, but when you have sensitive skin it’s best to be more cautious with how much you use. If too much detergent is used it can linger on your clothing and cause irritation. This can also happen when you over-fill your washing machine. To avoid this, try and use the correct amount of detergent and not over-fill your washing machine. 

Wash new clothes

After buying new clothes it’s always best to give them a wash before wearing them. Many stores will use starch or dyes on their clothing to make them last longer on the shop floor. These chemicals can cause irritation if not washed away. Before wearing any new item, put it on a quick wash just to ensure that your skin stays irritant-free. 

Hot wash your sheets 

Dust mites and allergens can cause a great amount of skin irritation, especially when the pollen count is high during the summer months. Avoid being surrounded by these irritants whilst sleeping by hot washing your bed sheets. The heat from the wash will kill any lingering allergens and leave you free to enjoy a dreamy sleep.

Rinse your machine

Regardless of whether you use liquid or powder laundry detergent, there will always be residue left over after a wash. Lighten your skincare 

The heat and humidity that comes with the summer season means that your usual skincare products could cause more harm than good. If you regularly use oil-based cleansers and heavy creams in your skincare routine, you could run the risk of trapping sweat and making skin oily, leading to acne breakouts. To avoid this, try a foaming cleanser. Foaming cleansers are lighter on the skin, and will still remove excess oil from the face, leaving your skin looking refreshed and acne-free.

Exfoliate 

Exfoliating removes dead skin cells and helps hydrate your skin. It’s important to exfoliate year-round, however, in the summer months, exfoliating should occur more frequently because your skin needs to be kept as clear of excess sweat as possible to avoid the risk of acne breakouts. Once a week, use a high-quality exfoliator to strip away dead skin cells and remove any sweat that has been deep-rooted into the skin. This will leave your face looking fresh and feeling clean. 

Try a combination moisturiser 

It is incredibly important to remember to moisturise during the summer. Despite the fact that you may find yourself sweating more during the summer months, that is not a reason to stop providing your skin with hydration. Try using a light-weight combination moisturiser that has an SPF of 30 or more. This will both protect your skin from becoming damaged from the sun and be light enough to prevent acne breakouts from oily skin.

Cut down on showers 

In the height of summer, you may find yourself having 2 showers a day in an attempt to cool yourself down. Despite the cooling effects of a shower, over showering causes dehydrated skin, which can lead to skin inflammation and even summer eczema. If you do find yourself needing to shower more often, keep them to a maximum length of 5 minutes and never shower in hot water. Additionally, when you get out of the shower, moisturise your skin to re-hydrate it. 

Stay hydrated

It’s important to stay hydrated throughout the year, but in summer your skin can become especially dry due to increased exposure to sunlight. Drinking water will keep your skin, and your body, hydrated, whilst aiding in the recovery of damaged skin cells. Aim to drink a minimum of 8 glasses of water every day to stay proficiently hydrated.

SPF is your best friend

If you know that you will be out in the sun make sure that you have plenty of sun cream available. Your sun cream needs to be amply applied to every bit of skin that is exposed to the sun, including ears, toes, and nose. Don’t forget that the SPF of your sun cream dictates how often it needs to be applied, for example, SPF 30 needs to be applied every 30 minutes. The sun can cause lasting damage to your skin, so make sure that you take sun cream with you EVERYWHERE during the summer season. 

Don’t forget your lips

Dry lips can occur during any season, however, the heat of summer can be especially cruel to your lips. If you don’t stay appropriately hydrated during the summer your lips can become dry, cracked, and even sunburnt. To protect your lips, invest in a rich lip balm with an SPF of 15 plus. This will ensure that your lips remain hydrated and protected from the sun. 

Your hands need protecting

It may sound strange, but you need to protect your hands during the summer. The skin on your hands is particularly thin, so if they are exposed to the sun without any protection they will be easily burnt. Find a hand cream that contains an SPF of 30 plus. This will leave your hands silky smooth and prevent them from becoming burnt.

Stay in the shade 

When it comes to summer it can be tempting to run straight into the sun and stay there until it goes away. Doing so can lead to lasting skin damage that can be fatal. The best way to protect your skin from the sun is to stay in the shade as much as possible. If you are going to be lying out in the sun, sit under an umbrella so only minimum parts of your skin are directly exposed to the sun. Invest in a wide-brimmed sunhat and sunglasses with high UV protection, and don’t forget to update your sun cream depending on it’s SPF. If you are looking to get a natural tan during the summer, don’t forget to take regular sun breaks and sit in complete shade for 15 minutes. This will prevent your skin from overheating and limit the potential of your skin burning. 

Treat burns quickly 

If you do get sunburnt it is integral that you treat your burn as quickly as possible. As soon as you realise that you are burnt immediately remove yourself from the sun and apply a layer of aloe vera to the burnt area. Aloe vera is an anti-inflammatory and will help soothe the burn. For the duration of your sunburn, avoid going into direct sunlight, stay hydrated and continuously layer on aloe vera, making sure that you are only applying a thin layer to prevent suffocating the skin.

How to rid your clothing of pet hair

We all love our pets, but what we don’t love is their hair covering our clothing. Getting rid of pet hair is not as simple as putting your clothing in the washing machine. If you were to do that, the hair would clump together and clog your washing machines drainage pipe. This could result in your washing machine breaking.

Rather than risk breaking your washing machine, here are some pre-treatment methods to rid your clothing of pet hair. 

  • A lint roller
  • Sticky tape 
  • Rubber gloves
  • A sponge
  • Tumble dryer

A lint roller 

A lint roller is one-sided adhesive paper wrapped around a barrel with a handle attached for easy use. They are incredibly handy when it comes to removing pet hair. Simply roll it over your hairy item of clothing and observe as the adhesive paper picks up the pet hair. If you notice the paper becoming clogged with pet hair, simply remove the top layer of adhesive paper and there will be another layer ready to use underneath.

Sticky tape 

If you don’t have a lint roller available, sticky tape can be just as effective. Simply tear off a strip of tape and lay it over your item of clothing. As you pull the tape from your clothing the pet hairs will come away with it. Repeat this process all over your garment until it is pet hair-free. Depending on the size of your clothing, and how hairy it is, you may need several strips of tape to complete the dehairing process.

Rubber gloves

An ordinary pair of rubber gloves are handy for washing the dishes and removing pet hair. Begin by laying your garment on a flat surface. Next, put on your rubber gloves and rub your clothing item. The movement will create friction between the fabric and the gloves, resulting in the pet hairs becoming loose and forming piles. These piles of hair are a lot easier to pick up and dispose of. Once the bigger clumps of pet hair have been disposed of, slightly wet your rubber gloves and repeat the process of rubbing your garment. This will pick up any stray hairs left on your clothes. 

A sponge 

If you are looking for a way to remove pet hairs without getting your clothes wet, use an ordinary kitchen sponge. Firstly, make sure that your sponge is completely clean and dry. Next, lay your clothing on a flat surface. Take your sponge and slowly rub it over the surface of your item. Your pet hairs will stick to the sponge and your clothing will remain dry. This method is best for quickly removing small amounts of pet hair, however, is not as effective if your clothing is completely covered in hair.

Tumble dryer

Using a tumble dryer is the best way to remove pet hair from multiple items of clothing. Put your items in the dryer and use a 10 minute, no heat, dryer cycle. This will soften the fibres in your clothing and loosen the pet hairs. Unlike a washing machine, your tumble dryer comes with a lint trap that will catch the pet hairs and prevent damage to your machine. Once the cycle has been completed, remove each item of clothing and give it a shake to remove stray hairs. Hay fever season tips

Hay fever season is in full force. Usually in it’s peak from mid-March to September, hay fever is an allergic reaction to pollen that can affect your eyes, nose, mouth, and throat. Despite the fact that there is no cure for hay fever, here are some top tips on how to alleviate your symptoms. 

  • Buy anti-allergy bedding 
  • Wash your bedding often 
  • Dry your bedding inside 
  • Shut your doors and windows
  • Keep pets out of your bedroom 
  • Drink plenty of water 
  • Shower before bed

Buy anti-allergen bedding 

If you suffer from hay fever it’s best to invest in anti-allergen bedding. Anti-allergen bedding can work in two ways depending on what type of bedding you buy. Firstly, it can work to trap dust and pollen within your bedding so that it can’t be dispersed and irritate your allergens. Alternatively, natural materials repel dust and pollen so that they can’t become trapped in your bedding. If you have found yourself in the past having a particularly difficult time sleeping due to hay fever symptoms, anti-allergen bedding is the first step to having a peaceful night’s sleep.

Wash your bedding often 

Bedding should be washed every 1-2 weeks, but if you suffer from hay fever you must make sure to wash it every week. It is very easy for pollen and dust to become trapped in your bedding and, if not washed every week, it can build up. This could cause more severe hay fever symptoms and a loss of sleep. Dry your bedding inside 

It is encouraged to dry your laundry outside whenever possible, however, if you have hay fever NEVER dry your bedding outside. It is incredibly easy for pollen to stick to your laundry, so drying your bedding outside will lead to an increase of pollen in your bedding. This can lead to increased hay fever symptoms and loss of sleep. To avoid this, dry your bedding either using a tumble dryer or by hanging over a drying rack.

Shut your doors and windows

During the summer it’s always nice to open your windows and let the fresh air circulate your home. If you are a hay fever sufferer this could lead to more harm than good. Pollen showers can happen at any time, however, the pollen count is always the highest first thing in the morning, and as the temperature begins to drop at night. If your windows are open during these times it can lead to a rush of pollen entering your home and irritating your hay fever symptoms. 

Keep pets out of your bedroom

If you have pets try and avoid having them in your bedroom. Pets, such as dogs and cats, carry pollen in their fur from being outside and rolling around in the grass. If you allow your pet into your bedroom, and specifically onto your bed, they can transfer pollen onto your bedding, leaving you to suffer with hay fever symptoms throughout the night. To avoid this, take every precaution to keep your room clear of pollen, including keeping your pets out.

Drink plenty of water 

Congestion and sinus pressure are two common hay fever symptoms. There are a number of ways that you can clear your sinuses, but the easiest is to stay hydrated. Drinking 8 glasses of water every day will keep your body hydrated, clear your sinuses, and reduce the production of histamine in your system.

Shower before bed

Spending time outdoors will leave pollen residing on your skin and in your hair so before going to bed its best to thoroughly wash your hair and body to remove all of the pollen. What is fabric softener?

Before answering the question of when you should use fabric softener, we need to first understand what it is. To begin with, as the name implies, fabric softener softens your clothing and leaves it smelling fresh. Asides from this, it will strengthen the fabric of your clothing, therefore making your clothes easier to iron. 

When do I add fabric softener?

Many people believe that fabric softener should be added to your washing at the same time as detergent. This is incorrect. You should add your fabric softener during your rinse cycle. Adding softener during a wash cycle will remove the chemical residue that makes your clothing soft, therefore making it ineffective.

Dress respectfully

Dubai is a traditional Islamic city so dressing conservatively is highly advised. It’s suggested that women wear loose-fitting dresses and skirts, and men trousers and jeans coupled with long sleeve tops. However, just because you have to dress conservatively, it doesn’t mean you can’t dress fashionably. Dubai is one of the capital cities of fashion, where men and women alike love to experiment with colours, fabrics, and patterns. So, be fashion-forward with your conservative attire. 

Take taxis 

Taxi services in Dubai are reasonably priced and a great way to escape the heat and travel around the city. Additionally, if you are planning a wild Dubai night out, it’s best to plan to get to the club via taxi. It’s an offence in Dubai to be seen on the street intoxicated and could lead to a fine or even a month in prison. Better to be safe and book your taxi to and from the club than risk a prison sentence.

Drink tap water 

Despite popular debate, it is safe to drink tap water in Dubai, so give it a taste. If you are still dubious, there are hotels that will import bottled water from Europe, however, due to the lack of environmental sustainability importation promotes, drinking imported water should be avoided. Instead, ask for locally sourced bottled water to avoid the harm to the environment and avoid the tap. 

Leave the city 

Dubai is a beautiful cosmopolitan city, but there is a lot to explore just outside the city walls. Take a trip to the desert one day and experience life beyond the city of Dubai. Desert safari experiences can be bought at a range of prices, and often involve a camel ride. Go wild for a day and return to the civilisation of the city later on.

See the Burj Khalifa 

No Dubai trip is complete without seeing the Burj Kalifa. Standing 829 meters tall, the Burj Kalifa is the tallest building in the world and an architectural sight to behold. As previously discussed, Dubai has a conservative dress code; this code also applies to swimwear. When at the beach or a pool it is completely acceptable to wear any form of swimwear that you desire. However, as soon as you step out of the water, you must be conscious of your clothing and consider throwing on a dress or shirt over your swimwear.

Take photos of government buildings

Regardless of where you go on holiday you always want to take a few snaps for the memories. Dubai is home to some of the most extraordinary modern-day buildings that, undoubtedly, need to be caught on camera. This being said, be mindful not to capture any government buildings as, for security reasons, this is strictly prohibited.

Eat or drink in public during Ramadan 

During the 9th month of the Islamic calendar, Muslims will take part in Ramadan where they will fast during daylight hours. If you are visiting Dubai during Ramadan the locals won’t expect you to take part in the festival, however, you must be respectful towards those who are. If you want to eat and drink during daylight hours there are a handful of cafes and restaurants that stay open, however, you’re options will be limited. Alternatively, you can eat and drink in your room until the sun goes down.

Engage in PDA 

Public Displays of Affection (PDA) are a strong offense in Dubai. Everything from a kiss on the cheek to hugging in public is considered indecent. At a push, a married couple may hold hands, but even that is pushing the boundaries of acceptability. To avoid causing offense, it’s best to save showering your other half in affection until you return to your hotel room.  

Make big plans on a Friday 

Friday is considered a holy day in Dubai and is therefore not for working. Don’t worry, the whole city doesn’t grind to a halt, but you should expect there to be a limited number of amenities open. Bear this in mind when planning your Dubai trip and consider having a beach day on Friday.
