How To Remove Wrinkles From Your Clothes

Wrinkles on our clothes aren’t a good look and they are sure to raise eyebrows. There are ways to reduce wrinkles from forming but sometimes, mistakes happen. The good news for you is that we’ve compiled a guide on how to remove wrinkles from your clothes.

how to remove wrinkles from your clothes

1. Use a Flat Iron

If wrinkles have formed on your clothes, a flat iron is your best friend when it comes to removing them. Simply press on your garment to remove any unwanted wrinkles. Be wary of the temperatures. If you’re dealing with cotton material, use high heat but if you’re dealing with silk, use low heat.

2. Blow Dry Your Garments

Your hairdryer isn’t just useful for making your hair look in good condition, it is also useful for getting wrinkles out of clothes. For this tip, simply set your hairdryer to a hot setting and lay the fabric on a flat surface. For the purposes of keeping your fabric in top condition, don’t blow-dry too close (hold it a couple of inches away).

3. Press Your Garment On a Flat Surface

For this tip, you can roll your wrinkled garment on a flat surface, roll it up and then put it underneath a mattress for between 15-30 minutes. The weight of the mattress will then press your garment and remove any wrinkles.

4. Press With A Damp Towel

Alternatively, you can also press down on your garment using a damp towel. This will effectively remove wrinkles.

5. Use Your Tumble Dryer

Your tumble dryer can do the job well in removing wrinkles but mostly for cotton clothes.

If you spot any stubborn wrinkles, simply put the garment in the dryer with a damp towel which helps create steam and eliminate the wrinkles. The timeframe for this is typically 5-10 minutes because any longer, the heat will not be good for your clothes.

6. Steam Using a Teapot

Your teapot is ideal for making that perfect cup of tea but it can also be used to steam your garments and remove tiny wrinkles. Perhaps an unconventional method but it does the job.

To begin, simply boil the water and then pour it out on a sink (leaving your teapot empty but hot). Afterwards, you can use your teapot just like an iron and press it on your garment on a table.

It’s important to note that this only works for cotton, wool and linen. Any clothes made from plastic or vinyl will result in them melting.

3 Tips For Taking Care Of Your Kandura

The kandura is the most traditional dress in UAE and it is the symbol of pride and identity. It is a long white cloak with full sleeves with no collar. Because the kandura is all white, the dirt and stains will be more visible but in this blog, we’ve compiled 3 tips for taking care of your kandura.

taking care of your kandura

1. Don’t Always Use The Washing Machine

The kandura is machine-washable and can withstand a cycle but don’t always use the washing machine.

While a washing machine can do a great job of cleaning the kandura, it can also cause the brightness to fade away quickly.

Washing the kandura by hand does produce great cleaning results.

If you notice any particular dirt or stain, make sure you add the laundry detergent directly to the affected area and rub gently to remove the stain. Once you’ve done that, soak the kandura under warm water for 10 minutes.

The rule of thumb when washing your kandura is to keep it separate from the coloured clothes to prevent colour bleeding.

2. Don’t Use The Tumble Dryer

When taking care of your kandura, it is essential you don’t use the tumble dryer because you’re putting the material under unnecessary pressure to dry faster at the expense of damaging it.

Instead, you can hang your kandura up to dry after it is been washed. To protect your kandura from unwanted mould, immediately get it out of the washing machine once the cycle has finished and hang it up on a clothesline.

By Air-drying your kandura, you will preserve its brightness and material better.

3. Iron Kanudras When They Are Damp

To get the best possible result, iron your kanduras while they are slightly damp at a cooler temperature for the best results.

Once your kandura is dry, it is recommended you use a steam iron to add a little moisture. This way, the water will soften and smoothen the creases and add a perfect balance to the ironing process.

Your kandura signifies pride and glory. You’ll want to consistently take care of it and keep it looking as good as new. We hope our 3 tips for taking care of your kandura have helped you.

If you lead a busy lifestyle and have no time for laundry, we do have services in UAE that will tackle any stains on your kandura or other pieces of clothing!

What Happens If My Clothes Shrink?

Laundry mistakes are inevitable – you can’t stop them. We love our clothes and want to take care of them but unfortunately, clothes shrinking is common. While this can be quite the heartache, you can still save your clothes even after they’ve shrunk. In this blog, we’ll provide the answer to the question ‘what happens if my clothes shrink?’.

What Happens if my clothes shrink

Firstly, it’s important we dive a little deeper into why clothes shrink. The most common reason is that the dryer’s temperature was too hot, and some clothes and fabrics shrink when exposed to high heat. We always recommend you read the labels to make sure your garment is suited for tumble drying.

Cotton, wool, and linen are usually materials that are prone to shrinking.

Now to the main question. If you do come across the ‘oh dear my clothes have shrunk’ moment, here is what to do.

Fill a sink with lukewarm water and add baby shampoo. Stir it well until you see bubbles. You can also use a conditioner that will help stretch the fibres of your garment.

After you’ve done that, put the shrunk garment in lukewarm water and leave it there between 30 minutes and one hour.

Once time has passed, remove the garment but make sure you’ve let the water drip back into the sink.

Then, get a large absorbent towel and roll up the garment inside to squeeze out the remaining water. If the garment is getting damp, then it means you are doing it right.

Finally, stretch your clothing out so it starts to reshape and then air dry it but monitor it carefully.

Clothes shrinking is a common laundry mistake but as our guide has shown, clothes can be recovered. However, we do recommend always reading care labels to prevent clothes from shrinking.

A reminder that our laundry services are available to you if you found yourself too busy to do laundry! No hassle and no clothes shrinking!

Clothes That Don’t Need Dry-Cleaning

Dry cleaning brings more life to our clothes. While some clothes will remain in great shape after they’ve been dry-cleaned, others don’t have the same luck due to the chemical solvent used during the dry-cleaning process. In this blog, we’ll list the clothes that don’t need dry cleaning.

1. Wool

While it is true that wool can be dry-cleaned, you should still be cautious and not dry-clean it after every use as you are risking ruining the fabric. As a rule of thumb, always wash it manually with cold water and soap because wool falls on the list of clothes that don’t need dry cleaning.

2. Cotton T-Shirts

It’s inevitable that cotton t-shirts will get dirt and stains on them, but the good news is that they don’t require dry cleaning. Instead, a good old-fashioned way of putting them in the washing machine and dryer will keep them as good as new.

3. Cashmere

Cashmere is a high-quality fabric and unfortunately, it can lose its shape and shrink if dry-cleaned. To take care of your cashmere, it’s recommended you hand wash it with lukewarm water plus added laundry detergent.

4. Synthetics

Most of your daily clothes are made from fabrics such as nylon, spandex and polyester. These also are clothes that don’t need dry-cleaning and are totally safe to be put in the washing machine.

5. PVC, Polyurethane and plastic

In addition, PVC, polyurethane, and plastic clothing don’t need to be dry-cleaned because they’ll get ruined during the process.

Whenever laundering or dry-cleaning your clothes, it’s best to read the care labels on clothes to be certain. Dry cleaning is a gift that can do a brilliant job when used on the right fabrics.

How To Prepare For Halloween

Spooky season is well and truly upon us! Whether you’re trick or treating or scaring yourself with a horror movie, Halloween is an exciting time. For parents, it can be overwhelming with all the planning. Just the thought of shopping for costumes, baking Halloween cookies and decorating the house can be haunting to hear! To lift your spirits, we’re here to help you out! Here is how to prepare for Halloween!

prepare for halloween by carving out pumpkins

1. Get The Kids Involved

Kids love sweets and chocolates on Halloween (and we don’t blame them!) but if you want to prepare for Halloween, you should get the kids involved in decorating the house. Kids are creative and no doubt will have fun coming up with ideas to create a scary atmosphere at your house.

In addition, you should use Halloween as a time to introduce your kids to baking. If your Halloween plans include staying in and watching a scary horror with the family, then why not enjoy the night with homemade Halloween cookies? It’s sure to be a scream!

Don’t forget the pumpkins! It wouldn’t be Halloween without them. Ask your kids to carve the Pumpkins so they can truly show their artistic side and add an extra spooky vibe to your house!

2. Shop Early For Halloween Costumes

Preparing for Halloween costumes requires time and patience but if you leave your Halloween shopping to the last day, you’ll be rushing and miss out on the best deals.

Ask your kids what costumes they like to wear and buy them as soon as they’ve made their decision.

We do recommend the idea of renting costumes as it can save you more money rather than buying them.

3. Prepare For Halloween Trick Or Treating

Even if you don’t plan on going out and prefer a nice cosy night inside, you’ll still get the chance to interact with the trick-or-treaters! You don’t want to scare the trick-or-treaters away by telling them you have no treats. Make sure you at least have a bucket of sweets that you can hand out to them!

Halloween is a time that the whole community gets involved so make an impression on the neighbourhood by stacking up pumpkins, spider webs and other scary Halloween decorations!

3 common dessert stains (and how to remove them)

Everybody loves desserts, especially on national dessert day. Calories don’t count on this day (don’t spoil the fun!) but the laundry does count when you accidentally spill dessert on your clothes. Fortunately, we are here to guide you on how to remove the most common dessert stains.

1. Cake Icing Stains

Words cannot describe how great cake is; It’s creamy and sweet, and sometimes, it can be annoying when it lands on your lap! The icing part of the cake especially can be tedious to remove from your clothes due to its oily fat and artificial pigment.

To remove the cake icing stain, get a butter knife to scrape it and then rinse the stain with cold water. Afterwards, treat the stained area with a stain remover and allow it to sit for 10-15 minutes.

2. Ice Cream Stains

Summer may be over but it’s still not too cold for ice cream, especially in October! Ice cream brings smiles to faces, but like the gloomy autumn days, ice cream stains on your clothes bring frowns.

First things first, treat the stain immediately and don’t allow it to settle further into the fabric. Scrape the ice cream stain off using a butter knife and then pour some laundry detergent into the stain.

Read our blog here for a full guide on removing ice cream stains.

3. Jelly Stains

Jelly is a delightful dessert that bursts with tasty fruity flavour. No matter what fruit your jelly is, it can wobble our laundry routine with an unexpected spill on your clothes.

Much like cake icing and ice cream stains, don’t let jelly stains settle into your clothes. Immediately scrape them off using a butter knife, wet a paper towel and blob the clothing and then proceed to pour stain remover.

It’s very important to remind you that do not to put any dessert-stained garments into the dryer because the high heat will cause the stain to remain. Always be sure that stains have been removed first.

Dos and Don’ts of Washing Fabrics

Fabrics need no introduction; they are great accessories in our wardrobes and their material is long-lasting. However, there are ways to preserve the fabric. This guide will walk you through the dos and don’ts of washing fabric.

Washing Fabrics

Do Pre-Treat Stains

Stains on our clothes are certain to happen, no matter how careful we are. Thankfully, they are easy to remove. Whenever food stains land on your fabric, pre-treat the stains immediately and don’t let them settle.

Don’t Mix Heavy Clothing With Fabrics

You’ve probably heard of the number one rule in laundry; always separate the colours but it’s also important that you don’t mix heavy clothing with fabrics to avoid damage to the fabrics.

Do Wash Dark Clothes Inside Out

Fabrics are a delicate material and therefore, they need to be washed cautiously. If you have dark clothes, wash them inside them out to prevent them from fading.

Don’t Ignore The Care Labels When Using The Tumble Dryer

The tumble dryer is a great appliance but unfortunately, it’s not made for every clothing. Don’t ignore the care labels when washing fabrics because the heat inside the dryer can overwhelm the fabric.

Do Separate Clothes By Fabric When Drying

If you’ve read the care labels and it says the fabric type is okay for tumble drying, you must still take caution and separate clothes. This is because if you dried heavier and lighter garments together, it could cause problems such as one garment coming out over-dried and the other one still remaining damp.

Don’t Use Soap To Remove Stains

There are a few ways to remove stains from fabrics but using soap isn’t one of them. The general rule of thumb is to pour liquid detergents on the stained area and let it settle for 15 minutes. This way, your fabric is preserved better.

Do Use Hot Water When Washing Lighter Fabrics

Hot water doesn’t work when you are removing a diary-stained from your clothes but do use hot water when washing lighter fabrics and towels because it will increase the chemical reaction of the detergent and kills bacteria.

Don’t Use Chlorine Bleach On Colour Fabrics

If you want your coloured fabrics to remain in the best condition, don’t use chlorine bleach because it will cause the colours to fade and white stains will appear.

As always with any laundry chore, read the labels. Fabrics such as wool, silk, leather and spandex should never be washed with bleach. If your fabric’s care labels say ‘bleach-safe’ or show a triangle symbol then you can use bleach. Otherwise, don’t use chlorine bleach on your fabrics.

We hope this guide will make your laundry easier next time you are taking care of fabric!

If you are still unsure or need help, just in touch with Laundryheap and we’ll wash your fabrics for you!

How To Clean The Ironing Board

Ironing is synonymous with clean and fresh clothes. It helps keep the wrinkles away from our clothes and makes us feel good afterwards. However, while we focus on ironing our clothes, it’s easy to forget the importance of cleaning our ironing board. In this blog, we’ll take a look at how to clean the ironing board.

Like with everything we store in the house, ironing boards can be prone to dust, dirt and debris. If you don’t clean the ironing board, there is a high chance of all the dirt latching onto your clothes.

clean ironing board

1. Remove Cover and Pad

Before cleaning the ironing board, remove the cover and pad. In most cases, cover boards are fine to go inside the washing machine but always read the care label to be certain.

If your ironing board cover isn’t suited for a washing machine, proceed to manual wash. Spot the dirty stains and get one cup of water, one cup of vinegar and three tablespoons of baking soda in a spray bottle and start to spray the stained area. After a few minutes, get a damp cloth and wipe the ironing board.

2. Proceed Wiping The Ironing Board

To ensure you clean the ironing board effectively, get a good sanitizer, continue using a damp cloth and start wiping the top of the surface. Don’t miss any parts of the ironing board; be wary of any lurking cobwebs underneath the board. Wipe down the legs of the board and remove any cobwebs you see. Let the spray settle to ensure the best cleaning results.

3. Start Drying Your Ironing Board

Once you’ve cleaned the ironing board, replace your cloth with a dry one and start wiping it to dry it. Once it is fully dry, put back the ironing board cover and pad.

Your clothes are ready to be ironed again with no concerns of dirt or dust transferring to them!

It’s a general rule of thumb to clean the ironing board monthly if it’s stored in a good dust-free place.

A friendly reminder that at Laundryheap, we do offer ironing services. If your ironing board is not in good shape, just get in touch with us and we’ll iron your clothes to perfection!
