How To Remove Gravy Stains

There is no denying that a Sunday roast would be incomplete without gravy. It’s delicious and adds flavour to the beef and potatoes! However, sometimes gravy ends up on your clothes accidentally as you are eating your tasty dinner. Due to its oily base, it can be a tricky stain to remove but don’t worry – in this blog, we’ll guide you on how to remove gravy stains!

Step 1 – Act Fast

The trick to removing gravy stains is to act fast. Gravy is composed of a mixture of grease and protein so if you don’t treat the stain immediately, it will stick to your clothes and be even harder to remove. And let’s face it, gravy looks way better on the plate than it does on clothes!

Step 2 – Scrape Away The Gravy

Once you’ve seen the gravy stains on your clothes, get a butter knife and try to scrape off the excess gravy from the fabric.

Step 3 – Apply a Stain Remover or Laundry Detergent

Then, get either a stain remover or laundry detergent and apply it to the stained area to remove gravy stains. Try not to pour too much otherwise it may ruin the fabric of your garment. When you’ve poured the stain remover or laundry detergent, wait 15 minutes before moving on to step number 4.

Step 4 – Wash In Hot Water

Put your garment in the washing machine and wash it in hot water (that is suited for the fabric) using laundry detergent and colour-safe bleach.

It’s essential you thoroughly check your garment after the wash cycle has finished to see if the gravy stains are still there. If they are there, we strongly advise AGAINST putting your garment in the tumble dryer because the high heat will make the stain nearly impossible to remove.

If you are happy with the results, either air-dry the garment or put it in the tumble dryer.

Cashmere is no different to wool when it comes to caring instructions. It should be washed on low-temperature settings on the washing machine. To maintain their softness, it’s best to turn the cashmere sweaters inside out before putting them in the washing machine. Much like wool, it should never be tumble dried.

Washing your cashmere sweaters by hand, in warm water, is also another option you can take when caring for your cashmere sweaters.

The first thing you need to know about caring for polyester clothing is the details on washing. As a rule of thumb, always read the care label to find what settings, on the washing machine, you need to wash your polyester clothing on.

To be on the safe side, turn the polyester inside out to maintain the quality.

If your washing machine doesn’t have polyester settings, we strongly recommend using warm settings because this will also help remove stains and prevent shrinkage.

What About Hand-Washing?

Alternatively, hand-washing polyester is an option; more often than not, it does the job. If you do want to go with this option, fill up a bowl with warm water and laundry detergent and put your garment inside. Afterwards, use cold water to rinse it out and then put it on a clothesline to dry if you don’t see any stains.

Avoid High Heat

Like any synthetic material, polyester is sensitive to high heat as it can damage the fabric.

To properly care for polyester clothing, make sure you set your tumble dryer to low-medium temperature settings.

In addition, it’s best to always hang polyester material up after they’ve dried to reduce wrinkles from forming. In turn, this reduces the time you need to do the ironing.

1. Treat The Stains Right Away

It can be quite tempting to say ‘I’ll do it later’ whenever you see a stain but to properly care for your football kit, don’t leave it to the last minute and treat the stains right away.

If you do wear your football kit when you play football and see any mud or grass on them, tackle the stains the minute you return home instead of waiting for laundry day. The longer you wait, the more chances of odours settling in the material.

2. Read Care Labels

Sport kits are usually made from polyester and synthetic fabrics. The general rule of thumb is that they can be washed in the washing machine but some parts of the kit such as logos, letters or numbers can fade away in the washing machine.

It’s always best to read the care label and if you want to play it safe, you can also wash your football kit by hand to prevent the prints from fading.

Furthermore, be sure to follow the golden rule of laundry; separate the colours. You don’t want your favourite kit’s colours to fade away.

3. Don’t Wash Above 30°C Setting

If you are washing your football kits at a temperature higher than 30°C then it’s time to blow the whistle on this habit and stop. Washing above the 30°C temperature setting will cause the prints to fade away.

We also highly recommend using cold water in your washing machine cycle to prevent shrinking.

Essentially, turn your shirt inside out to prevent the numbers and letters from peeling.

4. Avoid Tumble Dryer – Air Dry Instead

Putting your football kit in the tumble dryer is a big mistake that can lead to damage and shrinkage. Even leaving them to dry on radiators is something you should avoid doing.

Instead, proceed to air-dry your football kit either on a clothesline or on a drying rack.

How To Remove Butter Stains

Butter is delicious and looks good on toast, mac and cheese, and most desserts. However, one thing butter doesn’t look good on is our clothes. No matter how delicious butter is, the feeling of noticing butter stains on clothes is frustrating. Due to its greasy, oily texture and milk protein features, it can be quite a task to remove butter stains.

To help you, we’ve prepared a guide on how to remove butter stains.

Butter stains can be a little difficult to notice, especially when they’ve settled into our clothes. You’ll only notice the butter stains from close when you are doing your laundry.

If you are lucky to spot them quickly, stop what you are doing and get a butter knife to scrape off the butter. Then get a clean white cloth and blot away the stain.

Then, get baking soda and pour it over the stained area to help absorb the oil and let it sit for 15 minutes.

Afterwards, treat the stain with a laundry stain remover. As usual, ensure your fabric type is fine to be treated with the laundry stain remover.

You can also use a liquid detergent for this step. Once it’s been poured into the stained area, let it sit for 15 minutes.

Once you’ve pre-treated accordingly, you can wash your fabric at the hottest temperature (per care label instructions).

Lastly, check your garment after the washing machine cycle is completed. If the stain is removed, let the garment air dry.

We don’t recommend using the dryer because butter stains are hard to see when your garment is wet and straight out of the washing machine. Furthermore, high heat can do more damage to your fabric.

Essentially, you must read the care labels to ensure the fabrics need dry cleaning. If they need dry-cleaning, we strongly advise you to take your clothes to a professional cleaner like Laundryheap to remove butter stains and get the best results!

What Happens If My Clothes Shrink?

Laundry mistakes are inevitable – you can’t stop them. We love our clothes and want to take care of them but unfortunately, clothes shrinking is common. While this can be quite the heartache, you can still save your clothes even after they’ve shrunk. In this blog, we’ll provide the answer to the question ‘what happens if my clothes shrink?’.

What Happens if my clothes shrink

Firstly, it’s important we dive a little deeper into why clothes shrink. The most common reason is that the dryer’s temperature was too hot, and some clothes and fabrics shrink when exposed to high heat. We always recommend you read the labels to make sure your garment is suited for tumble drying.

Cotton, wool, and linen are usually materials that are prone to shrinking.

Now to the main question. If you do come across the ‘oh dear my clothes have shrunk’ moment, here is what to do.

Fill a sink with lukewarm water and add baby shampoo. Stir it well until you see bubbles. You can also use a conditioner that will help stretch the fibres of your garment.

After you’ve done that, put the shrunk garment in lukewarm water and leave it there between 30 minutes and one hour.

Once time has passed, remove the garment but make sure you’ve let the water drip back into the sink.

Then, get a large absorbent towel and roll up the garment inside to squeeze out the remaining water. If the garment is getting damp, then it means you are doing it right.

Finally, stretch your clothing out so it starts to reshape and then air dry it but monitor it carefully.

Clothes shrinking is a common laundry mistake but as our guide has shown, clothes can be recovered. However, we do recommend always reading care labels to prevent clothes from shrinking.

Does Baking Soda Fade Colours?

Baking soda is popular due to its ability to tackle tougher stains regardless if it’s a sofa or a garment. With its many benefits to your laundry routine, it’s no surprise that it is a great alternative to fabric softener. But does baking soda fade colours?

While baking soda can undeniably be a benefit to your laundry due to its natural antiseptic properties, you should still use it with caution due to its high pH level that can fade colours on clothes.

Delicate fabrics such as wool, cashmere and silk are sensitive to the pH level so using too much baking soda can cause colours to fade and in turn, makes removing stubborn stains like coffee more difficult.

In addition, over-using baking soda can cause fabrics like wool and fabrics to go coarse. To keep it safe, use white vinegar to prevent colours from fading and fabrics from getting coarse.

We recommend using baking soda to a minimum when it comes to treating stains on fabrics. Next time your delicate fabrics are stained, mix baking soda with water to treat the stains.

Baking soda is a great product and is generally safe to use in the laundry. When used in moderation and with care, it will not cause colours to fade but always be cautious when using it on delicate fabrics.
